Combining research in medicine, psychology and music, Sound Healing Reno is here to use music and sound to promote physical and mental health through evidence based techniques informed by subjective experiences and objective research.

Combining Music Therapy and Sound Healing

Sound healing is a great way to encourage mindful living as we notice the sounds that surround us and how they may or may not be changing our bodies, thoughts, and feelings. As a music therapist I encourage everyone to be their own sound healer. This means noticing when ear plugs might be helpful because things are a bit too loud as well as noticing when its time for that motivating playlist because it is hard to keep going. Music therapy is the work done with a music therapist but sound healing is a lifelong journey that is always changing and deeply personal to each individual.

How Music Therapy Works

Music is complex and processed in many different areas of the brain which allows music to help easily access memories and emotional states in a way that feels safe and approachable. Music therapy interventions can involve active participation or be receptive requiring minimal effort. Clients can experience music therapy in a group or individual setting either as stand alone treatment or with other forms of therapy.

What is Music Therapy?

“Music Therapy is the clinical & evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional (MT-BC) who has completed an approved music therapy program. Music therapy interventions can address a variety of healthcare & educational goals.” (American Music Therapy Association, musictherapy.org, n.d.) “Music therapists are highly trained, board-certified practitioners who work with a wide variety of individuals to help manage pain, reduce stress, express emotion, enhance memory, improve communication, and promote physical rehabilitation. Aspiring music therapists are required to complete approved university education, an internship at a site that meets the standards of the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA), and must take a board certification exam in order to practice music therapy.” (Berklee College of Music, n.d.)

What is Sound Healing?

Sound healing is the intentional use of sound to promote physical and mental health. This practice is based on the power of specific sounds and vibrations that regulate the central nervous system and naturally trigger deep states of relaxation. Sound healing practitioners often use instruments to create specific tones, patterns, and frequencies that encourage mindfulness and deep states of rest.

Meet the Therapist

Eric "Goose" Gieseke LPMT, MT-BC
Music Therapist, Sound Healer
Hello! My name is Eric Gieseke, but you can call me Goose. Music and science have been two of my passions throughout all of my life. It wasn't until I was twenty four years old that I discovered the field of music therapy and realized that this career was a great way to combine my two passions. After discovering the field I was determined to become a licensed professional music therapist myself. This took me over to Utah State University where I completed a degree in music therapy before moving down to Primary Children's Hospital in Salt Lake City to complete a clinical internship. While working on my degree and completing my internship, I worked with at-risk teens then as the director of the Cache Pride Center for LGBTQ+ youth. After completing all the requirements I passed the board certification exam to become a music therapist in 2023. As a therapist I prefer to use ACT, or Acceptance Commitment Therapy, principles to guide my clinical work. As a sound healer, I use similar tactics encouraging mindful and values based daily living. Sound and music have been my guides in living a mindful and values based life. I hope to share what I have learned (and what I will continue to learn) about using sound to support mental, physical, and spiritual health with as many people as possible! Please reach out and allow me learn a little bit about you so we can work together to see how music therapy and sound healing could improve your life!
